Supporting the European Commission’s REPowerEU Plan for a Sustainable Future
On September 28, 2022, the European Commission officially launched the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP), a major initiative announced in the REPowerEU Plan. This collaboration brings together key industry leaders committed to accelerating the energy transition and expanding biomethane production in Europe.
Among the twelve founding members, Pietro Fiorentini has been selected as a key contributor to this initiative, reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy, sustainability, and net-zero emissions.
A Symbolic Start for a New Era in Biomethane
During the launch ceremony in Brussels, representatives from the European Commission, alongside Harmen Dekker, CEO of the European Biogas Association, symbolically opened a valve produced by Pietro Fiorentini Group’s TIV Valves. This act marked the beginning of a transformative movement aimed at reducing Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels through sustainable energy solutions.
Biomethane Industrial Partnership: Key Goals and Impact
The BIP initiative is a crucial step towards achieving the European Commission’s target of increasing annual biomethane production to 35 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2030. This initiative is designed to:
- Reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas in a cost-effective way.
- Support the transition to an integrated, net-zero energy system.
- Promote economic growth in rural areas through renewable energy projects.
European Leadership in Biomethane Development
Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and leader of the European Green Deal, emphasized the importance of biomethane, stating:
“Europe has huge potential for the production of biomethane. With biomethane, we can replace fossil gas from Russia with homegrown, sustainable, and renewable gas. Biomethane also creates new economic opportunities in rural areas. The Biomethane Industrial Partnership that we launch today will be instrumental in increasing the production and use of biomethane across the EU.”
Pietro Fiorentini’s Commitment to the Energy Transition
Cristiano Nardi, Executive President of the Pietro Fiorentini Group, will serve as a member of the BIP Steering Committee. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the initiative, stating:
“Our company takes great responsibility in collaborating with the European Commission. We are committed to expanding biomethane production across the continent, delivering significant benefits in terms of reducing emissions and enhancing the sustainability of energy infrastructure. This marks a fundamental step toward a truly circular economy.”
Next Steps for the Biomethane Industrial Partnership
The technical kick-off meeting for the Biomethane Industrial Partnership is scheduled for October 25, 2022. Interested companies can register and participate at www.bip-europe.eu/get-involved.

About the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP)
As part of the REPowerEU Plan, the European Commission is driving rapid growth in renewable energy, setting a goal to increase biomethane production to 35 bcm annually by 2030. In May 2022, the European Commission introduced the Biomethane Action Plan, which led to the establishment of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP).
Since its formation, industry leaders and policymakers have been working together to ensure Europe meets this ambitious target, securing a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
