Pioneering Industrial Biological Methanation
MicroPyros BioEnerTec is one of the few companies worldwide that has industrialized the use of microorganisms for biological methanation—specifically, the Archaea. These unique microorganisms play a crucial role in converting hydrogen and carbon dioxide into biomethane, a renewable and sustainable energy source.
Cutting-Edge Microbiological Research and Development
In 2021, with the support of Pietro Fiorentini’s engineering and organizational expertise, MicroPyros began constructing a state-of-the-art microbiological laboratory. This facility will store and develop over 70 different strains of Archaea at -80°C, enhancing their selection and cultivation for high-efficiency biomethanation processes.
Additionally, collaboration with Hyter, another Pietro Fiorentini Group startup specializing in green hydrogen production, has enabled the development of integrated biomethane solutions. These high-performance plants will cover the entire biogas and biomethane production cycle, from upgrading raw biogas to injecting biomethane into the grid.
Innovative Pilot Plant for Next-Generation Methanation
According to Gianfranco De Feo, Chairman of the Advisory Board at MicroPyros BioEnerTec, a pilot plant will become operational in the summer. This facility will test and optimize high-efficiency microbiological reactors, marking a major milestone for the Pietro Fiorentini Group.
“For the first time, solutions from Hyter and Biokomp, combined with MicroPyros’ biotechnology, will create a fully integrated system,” stated De Feo. “The pilot plant will not only advance biomethanation but also tackle carbon monoxide conversion, addressing the urgent need to reduce atmospheric pollutants.”
