Oxford Flow and nZero Group Partner to Advance Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Heating in UK

Oxford Flow, a leading specialist in flow control equipment, has partnered with Thyson Technology, a subsidiary of nZero Group, to contribute to SGN’s groundbreaking H100 Fife Future of Gas project in Scotland. This collaboration marks a significant step toward delivering zero-carbon hydrogen for domestic heating, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

Pioneering Hydrogen-Powered Domestic Heating

H100 Fife is the first initiative of its kind, leveraging a direct supply of renewable energy to generate hydrogen in Buckhaven and Denbeath. This clean hydrogen will be used to power domestic heating systems, offering a sustainable alternative to natural gas. The project’s initial phase aims to supply hundreds of homes with green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis powered by a dedicated offshore wind turbine.

Oxford Flow’s Cutting-Edge Technology in Hydrogen Distribution

As part of this initiative, Oxford Flow will supply its IM-S gas regulators, featuring PRX2L pilots and PB1 balancers, to nZero Group. These components will be integrated into a twin-stream active-monitor station, ensuring efficient hydrogen distribution. Designed for up to 100% hydrogen compatibility, IM-S regulators surpass the UK government’s current target of a 20% hydrogen blend in Britain’s gas networks.

Key features of Oxford Flow’s IM-S gas regulators include:

  • Increased flow capacity, enhancing network efficiency.
  • Diaphragm-free design, eliminating the most common failure point in conventional gas regulators.
  • Extended maintenance intervals, reducing the need for frequent servicing and minimizing operational disruptions.

Industry Leaders Driving the Energy Transition

Faris Churcher, Business Lead – Gas & Energy Transition at Oxford Flow, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration:
“Our partnership with nZero Group is a crucial milestone in supporting the UK’s gas network transformation. As hydrogen integration progresses, utilizing innovative, hydrogen-ready technology ensures a smooth transition from natural gas. IM-S regulators are specifically engineered to support this shift, offering long-term reliability.”

Matt Allen, Managing Director at nZero Group, highlighted the significance of the partnership:
“We’re delighted to work with Oxford Flow on the H100 Fife project. Their commitment to innovation and sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission. Finding hydrogen-compatible solutions that are third-party verified is rare, and Oxford Flow’s dedication to this process solidifies our confidence in this collaboration.”

Enhancing Workforce Skills for the Hydrogen Economy

Beyond technology deployment, Oxford Flow has secured a contract with SGN to provide training for six to eight H100 technicians on the operation and maintenance of IM-S gas regulators. This initiative aims to equip professionals with the skills required to manage hydrogen infrastructure effectively, further accelerating the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy future.

A Step Closer to Net-Zero Hydrogen Integration

Oxford Flow and nZero Group’s collaboration underscores the UK’s proactive approach to integrating hydrogen into its gas networks. With reliable, hydrogen-ready infrastructure, innovative technology, and strategic partnerships, the H100 Fife project sets a precedent for future hydrogen deployment in residential heating, paving the way toward a sustainable and net-zero energy future.
