Exclusive Interview with Mario Nardi, CEO of Pietro Fiorentini Group
Pietro Fiorentini Group is a global leader in energy transformation, designing and developing advanced solutions for the entire natural gas supply chain, with a strong focus on renewable energy and digital innovation. With over 2,400 employees across 30+ global production and business sites, the company plays a key role in the transition towards smart energy solutions.
In this exclusive interview, Mario Nardi, CEO of Pietro Fiorentini Group, shares insights into how innovation, lean management, and sustainability drive the company’s success in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
Sustainability, Innovation, and Business Growth
How does sustainability align with innovation and business strategy at Pietro Fiorentini?
Sustainability is central to our product development, operations, and corporate strategy. We are integrating digital innovation and sustainable energy solutions, such as hydrogen-powered smart meters, into our portfolio.
However, sustainability goes beyond technology—it’s also about lean management principles. By eliminating waste, optimizing energy use, and adopting green mobility solutions, we ensure that sustainability is embedded in our operations.
Digitalization and the Future of Energy Infrastructure
Next Generation Europe emphasizes digitalization and sustainability. How do you see this impacting the energy sector?
To achieve smart cities and a more sustainable energy grid, large-scale digital transformation is essential. Technologies like 5G networks and smart metering will play a critical role in modernizing infrastructure.
However, Italy still faces challenges in supply chain organization. To maximize the impact of sustainability incentives, we must create synergy between industry, research institutions, and training programs. Post-pandemic, I expect accelerated progress, but it will require significant investment in management education and workforce development.
Adapting to COVID-19: Lessons in Agility
How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact Pietro Fiorentini’s operations?
In January 2020, we had an early glimpse of the crisis through our Shanghai branch. Being agile and adaptable was crucial—we transitioned 450 employees to remote work within a week, while ensuring that our production sites remained operational.
Some business activities, like meetings and administrative tasks, can be effectively managed remotely, leading to long-term efficiency improvements. However, a company also needs identity and belonging, so the challenge is to balance digitalization with human connection.
Customer-Centricity in Sustainable Business Strategy
Why is customer-centricity fundamental to sustainability?
Without customers, there is no future. In recent years, we have enhanced internal efficiency, but customer engagement and feedback are just as important.
By adopting a customer-first approach, we analyze the “voice of the customer” to understand their needs and expectations. This perspective helps us:
- Refine our products and services
- Offer proactive solutions before demand arises
- Enhance overall customer experience
Our goal is to place the right people, in the right role, at the right time, ensuring that every service we offer delivers real value.
The Role of Lean Management in Innovation
On your website, you highlight a quote from Taiichi Ohno, the creator of the Toyota Production System. How does lean management shape your organization?
We embrace Toyota’s lean management philosophy, focusing on efficiency, continuous improvement, and talent development.
Today, attracting and retaining top talent is essential. To stay competitive, companies must foster agile, independent, and goal-driven teams.
At Pietro Fiorentini, we work closely with leading universities, including:
- University of Padua (operations management research)
- Politecnico di Milano (organizational energy programs)
We also run an internal Academy to develop future leaders, offering fast-track career opportunities.
Open Innovation and Startups: Keys to a Resilient Energy Ecosystem
How important are open innovation and startup collaborations in shaping the future of the energy industry?
For us, innovation is a priority, and we actively pursue collaborations with startups. By integrating lean management principles with emerging energy technologies, we accelerate breakthrough developments.
However, to scale this approach on a national level, Italy needs a stronger innovation ecosystem, where corporations, startups, and research institutions work together to drive energy transformation.
Why Pietro Fiorentini is a Trailblazer in Energy Transformation
What makes Pietro Fiorentini a leader in the industry?
We are dynamic, forward-thinking, and committed to innovation, sustainability, and customer-centricity. While we operate in the Oil & Gas sector, our vision extends beyond—it’s reflected in our new tagline:
“Technology and solutions for a digital and sustainable world.”
We strive to stay ahead of the curve, pushing the boundaries of energy efficiency and digital transformation to shape a cleaner, smarter future.
