Pietro Fiorentini Partners with Hera Group in Italy’s First Hydrogen Gas Distribution Experiment

Advancing Hydrogen for Residential Use in Italy

Italy has launched its first hydrogen-blended natural gas experiment in a city gas distribution network, marking a significant step toward energy transition and carbon reduction. The project, conducted in Castelfranco Emilia (MO), involves injecting a hydrogen-methane blend into the local gas infrastructure managed by Inrete Distribuzione Energia, a subsidiary of Hera Group.

Hydrogen Injection in Residential Gas Networks

The pilot initiative, involving 30 households, is the first of its kind in Italy. It aims to evaluate hydrogen’s feasibility in residential heating and cooking, contributing to decarbonization goals by reducing CO₂ emissions.

As a key industrial partner, Pietro Fiorentini played a vital role by supplying:

  • NexMeter Smart Gas Meter – The first advanced gas smart meter in Italy capable of measuring hydrogen-methane mixtures. With over 150,000 installations across Italy, NexMeter ensures precision and safety in hydrogen-blended networks.
  • Hydrogen-Ready Pressure Reducing and Metering Station – A critical infrastructure component designed to regulate and measure hydrogen-methane blends safely and efficiently.

Hydrogen: A Key to Sustainable Energy Transition

This project aligns with Hera Group’s hydrogen strategy, which focuses on green gas integration to minimize environmental impact. Hydrogen combustion produces zero CO₂ emissions, emitting only water vapor, making it a promising clean energy alternative.

Federico Bronzini, CEO of Inrete Distribuzione Energia, emphasized:

“As early adopters, we are identifying innovative solutions to manage alternative energy vectors with lower environmental impact. Hydrogen can be produced through localized industrial processes, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.”

Francesco Fortuna, Italy Country Manager at Pietro Fiorentini, highlighted:

“This project marks a turning point for hydrogen use in residential settings. Previously limited to industrial applications, hydrogen is now being tested in domestic gas networks. Our expertise in projects like Hy4Heat in the UK and our Arcugnano hydrogen testing lab allows us to develop safe, efficient hydrogen infrastructure.”

A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future

This groundbreaking initiative brings together major energy and technology leaders, including Pietro Fiorentini, BAXI, Bosch, Electrolux, Emerson, Immergas, Innovhub SSI, RINA, Snam, and Valpres (Bonomi Group). Their joint efforts aim to advance hydrogen integration in existing gas infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future in Italy and beyond.

The Future of Hydrogen in Italy

As Europe accelerates its hydrogen adoption, this pioneering project positions Italy as a leader in low-carbon energy solutions. By leveraging hydrogen-methane blends, the country is taking a critical step toward decarbonizing residential energy consumption while ensuring a secure and sustainable energy supply.
